2nd Raffle for the Podencos!
Win a 42 inch plasma television!
Thanks to the generosity of Ted, one of our Solsters, we are able to offer you a really nice item to buy tickets for in a raffle. Ted would like to make this generous offer in memory of his recently departed canine friend, Jagger (Manor Lamp) 1993-2007.
Ted has also stipulated that he would like SOL to make a grant from the money raised to the Podencos who continue to suffer in Spain and particularly in Ibiza. We have agreed that, since the last £1,000 went to Passion Levriers for the first wave of Podencos, the funds raised this time will go to ANAA who have taken in 39 of the Podencos from Ibiza. http://www.anaaweb.org/
We will be drawing the raffle this friday, 7th September

The fantastic amount raised was £2,800, that worked out at £1,400 each for The Greyhound Sanctuary and for the oldies at Tailends.
A huge thank you to everyone who donated and bid. Your continued friendship and support are very much appreciated.

Raffle to help Podencos
So many of you asked us what could be done to help the Podencos that were posted about recently (for those who aren't aware of their awful plight it can be found here)
Shiba a member of SOL very kindly donated two beautiful framed pictures of foxes, each signed by the artists and each cost over £100 each!. We have decided to raffle them both off to raise much needed funds to help get these dogs to safety.
You can buy a single ticket for £1, or 6 for a fiver. Come on, please help, every single penny of this is going to the Podencos, and we need YOUR help to get them out of that hell hole.

The 'Going for the Dogs Project'
The Going for the Dogs Project is an exciting new project launched by TRPD. The idea is to help volunteers who transport rescue dogs to keep the dogs safe.
Most people who are involved in transporting rescue dogs bring along their own collars and leads, but this is not a complete solution to the problem. The collar and lead owner may want the next transporter to use their own collar and lead and return the ones on the dog immediately. This involves one or more changes of collar. Or the collar and lead owner may decide that it is safer to let the collar and lead stay with the dog right to the end of its journey. That's the safer option but an expensive one for the regular transporter.
Therefore, this is where the 'Going for the Dogs Project' leaps into the breach to make and provide travel collars for rescue dogs in transit.

Black Beauties Website!
Sighthounds Online is responsible for the Black Beauties website, which celebrates all black sighthounds who are looking for their forever home.
The site came into being after a member of Sighthounds Online found a site promoting black dogs in general. Through discussion on our forum, we decided to start our own UK version for sighthounds.
Why these beautiful hounds are overlooked is a bit of a mystery. Their nature is no different to other hounds - the only difference is their colour. Yet rescues report that black hounds wait much longer for a home than any other colour.
We want to show off all the black beauty sighthounds, waiting in rescues all over the country, for their own comfy sofa. As well as show you some of the success stories.
So if you are looking for a companion, you could do much worse than to start your search at http://www.blackbeauties.org.uk/

1000 Members
In April our membership reached 1000. Hooray!
To celebrate we had an online party and feted our thousandth member. She, known to us as Jellybeanangel, was offered a years free membership of the exclusive SOL Mate club and was also asked to choose a rescue hound to sponsor at SOL's expense. She chose Sasha, an oldie from Greyhound Gap. Even better news came when Sasha's foster mum decided that they wanted Sasha to stay in their family and so the sponsorship money will be used to pay the on-going vet bills for her.

Sponsor a Sighthound on SOL
After the great success that this enjoyed last year, we did a re-run in March. And our members came up trumps again and flocked forward to sponsor a rescue hound for £75 for a year.
We put forward dogs from the following rescues:
GLWR, Greyhound Gap, GRWE, Tailends and Scooby.
As more and more people came forward to offer sponsorship for the hounds, we added more and more to the original 10. And by the end of the sponsorship event we had raised £1,350 for the rescues. Added to that, some of our members opted to continue to sponsor the dogs that they had supported during the previous year. And an exceptionally generous member also added a personal donation of £400! Thank you that person and many, many thanks too to all our generous members.
